4 Bedroom Flat
Singapore
The Accordion Apartment gets its name from being a modern interpretation of the flexible communal home.
In converting the ubiquitous 4-room BTO public housing flat in Singapore, walls were removed and spaces redefined with the insertion of furniture and partitions; creating flexible zones that fit many different conditions. The accordion partition walls we created function to delineate the private and public functions of the home by creating pockets of segmentation for more privacy or openness for larger gatherings.
The dining room was the part of the home where most meaningful interactions occurred, it was, therefore, special to design a dining table that fulfilled more than one function. A full-height shoe cabinet, inserted by the entrance foyer, helps to delineate the foyer space from the rest of the apartment, while the picture window detail helps to visually frame the heart of the dining space - the custom dining island.
Accordion partition walls in light timber laminate finish fold apart and open the study into the adjacent dining room, forming a larger communal space to accommodate gatherings and parties. Closing the accordion doors transforms the open plan into the owners’ quiet study room, where we designed a full-height custom study unit with extra storage to keep the day’s mess away.
